Servant on the Edge of History
By Sam James / Hannibal Books
One of the most powerful books I’ve read in recent years. While many Americans protested the Vietnam war in the 1960’s, Sam James served God in the war-ravaged country of the Republic of South Vietnam. With bombs exploding, civilians getting caught crossfires, and the communists moving in, Sam James and his wife work to share the love of Jesus with a people who badly need to hear about the Lord. James, his wife, and their four children spent fourteen years as missionaries in Vietnam. This book tells the story of how God worked miracles, saved lives, and raised up Christian leaders in this war-ravaged country. Even the onslaught of the “Tet Offensive” could not stop the power of God. Those looking to learn about missionaries, revivals, or history should read this work. With the Iraq War taking place today, those who seek to serve as missionaries in war-torn Iraq need to this Sam James book and to learn what God can do in the lives of those who are faithful.
The Nature of the Atonement: Four Views
Edited by James K. Beilby & Paul R. Eddy / InterVarsity Press
(Book Review)
Debates over the work of Christ on the cross and what his death and resurrection mean to humanity fill theology books around the world. The two more popular camps in this debate are that of the Calvinists and the Arminians. One of the more controversial facets of the debate revolves around the nature of the atonement. Scholars argue over what Christ’s work does, how it works, and how man benefits from the cross. James Beilby and Paul R. Eddy, both professors of theology at Bethel University, offer this entry into this debate by inviting scholars to defend and critique four teachings regarding the atonement: Christus Victor, penal substitutionary, healing, and kaleidoscopic.
