Thank God for His Blessings

Many people have traveled throughout the country to visit friends and family this Thanksgiving holiday. Schoolchildren all over the nation put on presentations, dressed up as pilgrims and Native Americans, and acted out the first thanksgiving. In many ways, this Thanksgiving is just like all the others. First Thanksgiving between the Pilgrims and Indians (Native Americans)Football fans anticipate the NFL games, food lovers sit around the table eating wonderfully prepared food, and plans are made to hit the stores as soon as the doors open to begin Christmas shopping. Yes, this season can be just one more like many before it.

However, it is my prayer that you will take time from your business, find a few quiet moments with God, and say “Thank you, God, for all you’ve blessed me with.” Let this this Thanksgiving holiday be the time when you begin living a life of thanksgiving to God. To the one who gave up his own, innocent son to pay for our sins, we owe a great deal of thanks. That thanks begins by accepting Jesus as savior.

Enjoy this Thanksgiving with family and friends; remember to thank God for even the little blessings in life.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Bible in Society: Issue Response Reports

Posted by John L. Rothra on November 21, 2006 under Devotional/Teaching, Site Updates | Comments are off for this article

A series of brief response papers will be made available over the next few weeks. These are intended to provide a summary of the Biblical perspective on various issues that churches, church leaders, and individual believers encounter each day. The first topic made available deals with divorce and remarriage. With some studies showing the divorce rate near 50%, this epidemic is found not only in the secular world, but within the body of Christ. These response reports will summarize the biblical perspective of this and many other issues.

I encourage every Christian to study the word of God, ask Him to help you understand, and depend on the Holy Spirit to guide you as you seek to understand the Bible. One of the most critical problems today is that Christians read the Bible, but do not study it. Christians are inundated with books on how to read the entire Bible in a short time period, but less information on how to understand and apply what was read. I encourage all Christians to take Paul’s instructions to Timothy as their own instructions:

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15, NASB).

The “BC” Story (AKA: Why clear communication is critical)

I got this in an email and thought it was worth sharing. If you know the author, please let me know so I can give proper credit.

A very proper lady began planning a week’s camping vacation for her and her Baptist Church group. She wrote to a campground for reservations. She wanted to make sure that the campground was fully equipped and modern, but couldn’t bring herself to write the word ‘toilet’ in her letter. So, she decided on the old-fashioned term ‘Bathroom Commode.’ Once written down she still was not comfortable. Finally she decided on the abbreviation ‘B.C.’ and wrote, ‘does your campground have its own B.C.?’

“When the campground owner received the letter, he couldn’t figure out what she meant by ‘B.C.’ He showed it to several of the campers, one of whom suggested the lady was obviously referring to a Baptist Church since there was a letterhead on the paper which referred to a Baptist Church. So he sent this reply.

Dear Madam:

The B.C. is located nine miles from the camp ground in a beautiful grove of trees. I admit it is quite a distance if you are in the habit of going regularly. No doubt you will be pleased to know that it will seat 350 people at one time, and it is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday of each week. Some folks like to take their lunch and make a day of it. The acoustics are very good, so everyone can hear even the quietest passages. It may interest you to know that my daughter met her husband there. We are also having a fund-raiser to purchase new seats, as the old ones have holes in them.

Unfortunately my wife is ill and has not been able to attend regularly. It’s been a good six months since she last went. It pains her very much not to be able to go more often. As we grow older, it seems to be more of an effort, especially in cold weather.

Perhaps I could accompany you the first time you go, sit with you, and introduce you to all the other folks who will be there. I look forward to your visit.

We offer a very friendly campground.

Sincerely,
Herman
